    Default Which came first?

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

Please back up your replies with scientific data.

    The egg.
Evolution states that DNA changes trough selection occur before birth so the muttation must have taken place within the egg.

Note: there was a ancient chicken then the above happened and then the actual chicken appeared.

The question is, which one shall i have for lunch?

Edit in order to attempt to back up my comment with scientific data that will most probably result in fail:

I think that if you look into the transversal laws of equilibrium it is obvious that you need to read the avian family tree.

Clearly Jesus is at the top.

    Thread over.

Well since eggs lack the appendages to come, I believe it was the rooster.

I think the chicken was a random mutation and the egg it came out of was not a chicken egg at all so the chicken came first...

not really I have no idea but whatever.

Though maybe true, the mutation could have ocurred in the parent for several reasons, and the changed DNA was passed on to the children in the egg.

Still you can think it this way... there existed a certain creature similar to a chicken, but different, which at a certain point had a mutation in its DNA and became a chicken. Consider the first chicken, the egg it will lay is a chicken egg, of course, but the egg it came from was laid by that similar creature, so it was a somecreature egg. So I'd say it was the chicken first.

Unless you consider the egg to be of the species it has inside, and not of the species which laid it. In that case, the egg would be first. It's mostly a matter of to whom do you think the egg belongs to.

The question does not say that the egg had to be a chicken egg, and eggs have been used since long before the chicken was around.

But if you are wondering if the chicken came before the chicken egg, then it would still be the egg, as an egg birthing a chicken is a chicken egg. Not a dinosaur egg, not a fish egg, and not a Raptor-Jesus egg.
    Comic.

The problem with using scientific data to back up any of these claims is that we have no data of the time when either chicken or egg first came about.

Sure, many scientists have theories as to how everything came about, but those are just theories, and until we have access to a time machine, we have no idea what actually happened before recorded history.

So, my answer to the question is: Who cares?
