    its a very quick and dirty stat yes arithmetically it just takes square of pop and divides it by no of player. however avg size is a proxy for quality/skill and population is the proxy for available resources. without getting into the complexities of normalising both to a common scale and then assigning weightages it just gives a quick and dirty measure of skill and the resource base availale to that skill to turn into effectively deployed troops. It may not always accurately describe as alliance that depends more on raiding for its resource base and likes to keep pop down, e.g. FU so don't take offence

    You're still double counting population; just cause one is divided by the number of players in an ally doesn't make it that much different.

    Also I'd like to point out that population doesn't mean nearly as much as you're giving it credit for. There are plenty of players who are smaller but still will have larger fields than most. That's more than enough to make up for this "holy" pop:resource ratio. It might have some relevance but there's not enough emphasis put on capital fields in that because they generate so much more.
