The bridge of Honeycomb was abuzz with activity. The High Admiral had begun contacting the other admirals to begin a thorough investigation and subsequent fortification of Kain borders, exploring the nearby systems and establishing basic ftl exclusion regions around inhabited regions to divert other species away from the civilian populace. Although word of the alien empires would soon reach the public, so far it had not, allowing the Seer more time to prepare an appropriate broadcast. Thrak himself had retired to his chambers to contact the Seer personally and properly co-ordinate the missions.

As First Officer, that left Jormun in command of the bridge. The constant flow of information both verbally and on his own screen was tiring, so it was hardly surprising that Thrak had chosen to retire early. Jormun was happy to fill in though, being the right hand man of the most powerful man in the protectorate fleet had certain perks. It was as he was thinking of his plans for the future that a particularly loud yelling reached his ears. Looking up towards the sound, his attention was drawn almost immediately to his screen. It was a live feed from the monitoring stations, who had been given a direct link to Admiral Thrak for important situations only.

Silencing the bridge, Jormun turned his attention to the feed. ''Yes? This is the Honeycomb, the High Admiral is busy right now but I am qualified to handle business on his behalf.'' The authoritative tone of his voice had been carefully cultivated over his years as admiral and now he felt it was more important than ever.

''Sorry to disturb you First Officer but we have experienced an irregularity from one of our probes. We originally dismissed its behaviour and assumed it was related to rip-drive malfuncti-'' The Kain on the other end suddenly fell quiet, his eyes suddenly moving from side to side rapidly as if skim reading. ''Sir, the probe has just received an external stimuli, possibly an attempt at communication. I am forwarding the logs immediately along with co-ordinates and probe override codes, since the stimuli isn't being forwarded to our central stations. I need to contact the Chancellor immediately sir.''

''Very well, I will forward this information to the admiralty and have the prove investigated.'' With that, Jormun ended the feed and was about to interrupt Thrak when he noticed someone stood beside him. He turned and was surprised to see the ships communications officer. ''Yes?''

''Before you took the call from the stations we intercepted another message. I tried to get your attention but the live feed took precedence over all other messages we tried to forward.'' The comms officer shifted her weight slightly, seemingly casual but clearly a deliberate action meant to calm her nerves. ''Sir, the Castorians have contacted us. Due to our position we have intercepted the message before it reaches the core of the protectorate. Their leader is on his way to discuss matters of state with the Seer.''

Jormuns throat tightened up. This news was bound to overshadow the probe matter and it would end up being overlooked or neglected if he just forwarded the news. Damn, I have to make an important decision. A really important decision. ''Leave it with me Ren, I'll inform the High Admiral and the Seer.'' I'll dispatch a small group of admirals to investigate the probe and leave it out of my report for now. I'll tell him later...

    (Resuming from last post)

Seer Farandi was pacing around his office, he had tried to sit still but found it difficult to contain his emotions. ''We will need to prepare the station for their required atmosphere and gravitational strength. Along with food! How do we know what they eat? Did they send that information? Someone get on checking that.'' A minor secretary took that as a window of opportunity to escape the highly charged atmosphere within the meeting. ''We should take the visit as an opportunity to officially inform the public of the existence of the Castorians and other races. Perhaps we should invite the Ionans and the Bug to the event too? Schedule an arrival for a week or so after the Castorians? If we can convince the public that the galaxy is united then it will help to suppress any panic.'' Finorlan paused for breath.

From the corner of the room Thraks voice drifted from a terminal. ''Listen, they will arrive in a few hours. Just have an interception pulse bring them out of ftl shortly before the border, then we can guide them into a rift and have them arrive in space above Kai. We can assess the sutability of the ship docking apparatus and if they don't mesh close enough we can just shuttle them across to this station. They will have brought supplies of their own on the ship so starvation isn't going to happen before we adapt. Relax Fin. Just arrange the escort and take it from there. I can spare a third of the fleet at most however I suspect anything more than a dozen would be wasted. When my duties here are done I will come to the station and join you.''

The affect the words had on Finorlan were amazing. He hated that Thrak knew exactly what to do every time. ''That sounds like a plan. Everyone, get to it. I'll work on contacting the other empires once the Castorians show up.''

The trip had been without incident, ever since they had left Castor the cruiser had been at its maximum interstellar speed, mostly cut off and ignored by the rest of the universe. To pass the time during the projected two day trip, Alexander had taken to studying what was known of the Kain, and making use of it. Natalia, however, had opted to go into cryo for the first day of the trip, and spend the second thawing*.

It was around noon of the second day of the journey and Alex had just finished a side experiment, an attempt to make Kain-edible food as a gift. Emerging from the ship's science lab he noticed Natalia sitting at the navigation system, wearing her powered armor suit. The suit itself was a cross between the light and medium categories, unsuited to battlefield use, optimized for use aboard a starship and tight quarters, where the bulkier suits would be hindered. Quite a bit of the works of the suit were visible, Natalia had removed several armor plates and was meticulously cleaning them.
"Do you ever take that off?" Alex asked her, jokingly.
"Not really" she replied "I wore most of it in cryo."
"Well, I hope you brought a regular uniform, as I have. I don't know how tolerant our hosts will be of an almost half-ton walking tank, if you get what I mean."
Natalia tilted her head "I only brought a sidearm. Besides, you have yourself to blame, Confederation law mandates that all-"
"That all elected members of the Senate and holders of Confederate Office be escorted by at least one Guard. I know the law, I signed it."
Before Natalia could respond, the autopilot set off an alarm. She quickly read over the console. "The ship's detected an anomaly, it's bringing us back into real-space to prevent drive damage."
"Just great.." Alex sighed as the ship slipped out of hyperspace "How far off are we?"
"The autopilot says we're right on the border of Kain space. They're probably the ones who are intercepting us." She checked the sensors "Yep, sensor readings fit with scans of known Kain drive emissions and build approaching us from the direction of the anomaly. Want me to open a channel?"
    "Yes, holographic."
Natalia nodded and a beep came from the main console, indicating the channel was open.

"Greetings Kain vessels. I am Federal Chancellor Alexander of the Confederation. I'm going to assume that there is a good reason we were intercepted?"

*Short-term cryogenic freezing can have longer lasting or more evident side effects than long-term, mostly because the freeze and thaw times are much faster. Most are comparable to a limb that has "fallen asleep", with the accompanying numbness and prickling sensation.

The Seer had been on edge the whole time they had been waiting for the Castorian delegation to arrive. He had tried to pass the time with meditation, something that he had never really gotten the hang of. He would try to clear his mind but then a dozen thoughts would leap at him at once. Yet no matter how useless he deemed the efforts he persisted if for no more reason than to be prepared. Initial reports claimed the Castorians were not of a mind-breaking race but meditation was a key part of preparing ones mind against intrusion. His inability to meditate was the main reason he had never gotten beyond stage 1 of that tactic. It had almost proven disastrous when he were younger, unable to defend himself from the combined thought barrage of a pack of pretirapiers.

It was partway through one of these meditation sessions that he received word that a ship was being pulled out of ftl status. They have arrived. Making himself look presentable before such a historic event, Finorlan tried to look as regal and elegant as he could, his dark blue Seers robes meticulously straightened over his more casual, and infinitely more comfortable, jet black outfit. He was about to establish a communication link from his quarters when he was notified that the Castorians had beaten him to it.

Before him stood a holographic figure most unlike the descriptions of the Castorians he had expected. Yet from that he knew this was their creator and leader, the one called Alexander. "Greetings Kain vessels. I am Federal Chancellor Alexander of the Confederation. I'm going to assume that there is a good reason we were intercepted?"

Despite himself, the Seer smiled. ''Why, it would be discourteous for a host to insist on such important guests travel alone. We are here to greet you, Federal Chancellor. I am Finorlan Farandi, elected Seer of the Kain people and the Gaian Protectorate. We have prepared a... rift?'' The seer turned his head slightly to check he was getting the foreign words correct. ''Yes, a rift, that will lead to our capital planet and centre of government. With your leave, we will enter into this rift together as equals and discuss the future of our two nations in a place of comfort.''

As he concluded, the Seer motioned for the rift and its destination co-ordinates be transferred over to the Castorian vessel.

    ''Shall we?''

    ((For Bloogle))

“An escort?” He hesitated, “Under normal circumstances I would insist one isn't necessary. However, these circumstances are far greater than normal, and I am honored that you took the effort to prepare one. My ship will set course for the rift immediately, Seer Farandi.”
Alexander did a slight bow and then cut the channel.
“Ship, set course for the coordinates the Kain vessel sent us. Disregard any spacial anomalies.”
A small beep was the only confirmation from the autopilot as the ship fired its engines and approached the rift.
“Natalia, I'm going to get in uniform, lab coats aren't exactly formal. While I'm gone, can you monitor the sensor outputs and scan the rift? You do know how to operate a the ship's sensors, right?”
“I think” She looked at the instrument panel. “It's close enough to the sensor suites on drop shuttles, at the least I can get a snapshot as we pass through.”
“Good, by the time we pass through I should be ready.”

The cruiser passed the Kain ships as it neared the rift, its sleek form silhouetted briefly against the alien craft as it sped through space. With a flash it was gone, and the next instant it appeared on the other side of the rift.

Minutes later Alexander emerged from his quarters in full dress uniform, pitch black with gold cuffs and gold bands on the upper arm, with gold epaulets on the shoulders. There was only one decoration, a medallion with the emblem of Castor*, pinned tightly to the fabric.
“How did the scans turn out?” He asked, before adjusting his collar.
“There's not much I can understand, except that we lost gravity for a moment. The ship records a loss of gravity on all decks, but the a-grav was still on.”
“Well, I'll have to look into it later. Our hosts are bound to request us soon.”

(( Ash, again, I am kind of waiting for that moment where I interact. I will try to offer up more, but most of your posts leave no open end for me, unless (check PM/Skype) ))

(( Also, do you mind putting quotes around that . . . quote in your signature? It gives the impression that I am the said loophole. ^^ ))

(( Red, your response to my 'nagging' has rendered me jubilant; I can only hope MX is graced with more votes than just mine. ))

(( Also, your signature most nearly translates to the sentence fragment: "Before only his wound flesh" or "Only his flesh wound". IF you are going for the "It's only a flesh wound", you would want: "ID CARNIS CICATRIX TANTUM EST". IN all technicality, cicatrix and vulnus are interchangeable, however, vulnus more appropriately describes a hurt transient of physical nature in many cases. And cicatrix sounds cooler. Additionally, pulpa is a rare word (and also in the wrong case), so I replaced it with what most nearly meant "superficial/surface flesh". Tune in later for more latin fun! ))
